R.I.P. κυνάριον

Photo of κυνάριον: Last days.

She never caught any of those pesky squirrels, but she did take on a deer. She once "treed" a possum, and would not come inside until she had led me into the woods that night (flashlight in hand) to point to her accomplishment and receive a "good dog."
Thankfully, she never caught the skunk.

We thank God for the times together, and that she died peacefully on her bed, in her house, with her family.

From Funeral Service for a Dog, by Scooper:

"Our German forefathers had a very kind religion. They believed that, after death, they would meet again all the good dogs that had been their companions in life. I wish I could believe that, too." — Otto von Bismarck (1815-1889)

"Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. And the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality - then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, ‘Death is swallowed up in victory.’ O death, where is thy sting? O grave where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." — 1 Corinthians 15:51-57

We give thanks for all the blessings of this life.

  1. My sincere condolences, Underground Pewster. We also had to put down a beloved κυνάριον earlier this year, and only now are becoming used to life without her. Grace and peace to you and your loved ones.

Only those of us who've lost a canine companion can understand the loss which follows. My sympathies to you and yours.

  5. Most merciful God, giver of all good gifts; comfort this family in their grief. Surround them with your love and give them that peace which surpasses all understanding, through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen

  6. This past July 7, a week after she had been attacked by an off-leash dog, my beautiful Portia died. She is the third dog we have lost in four years. My deepest condolences go our to you, Underground Pewster. What a blessing dogs are! How painful it is when they die.

  7. von Bismark and those who believe there will be no animals in heaven, even our beloved pets, must never have read and been comforted by Isaiah. But you can be comforted by him:

    Isaiah 11:6-10
6And the wolf will dwell with the lamb,And the leopard will lie down with the young goat,And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little boy will lead them.
7Also the cow and the bear will graze,Their young will lie down together,And the lion will eat straw like the ox.
8The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra,And the weaned child will put his hand on the viper's den.
9They will not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain,For the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD As the waters cover the sea.
10Then in that day The nations will resort to the root of Jesse, Who will stand as a signal for the peoples; And His resting place will be glorious.

I am sorry for your loss and glad for the years she and your family blessed each other. We can all look forward to a romp through the fields with our pets in New Jerusalem!

  8. Pewster,

As one who adores my own "best friend, Ralffe" (a four year old Brittnay), my heart goes out to you. May light perpetual shine upon your dear friend. I am convinced that God has a place for his four-legged saints in heaven!

  9. So sorry to hear of your loss, UP. As a dog lover, I share your pain---I have loved many dogs in my life.

Here is Jimmy Stewart, with a great poem about his dog:

    Pewster,
I grieve with you and your family, as I have buried several beloved cats, who were my companions in times of sorrow and times of joy. After the death of the Silver Princess, I dreamed a dream in which Christ came to me surrounded by the hosts of heaven, but all I could see was my lovely cat nestled in his arms. I was ashamed and said, "Lord, I am afraid that I have shown her love that should have been to You." He answered, "Do you not understand? All the love you showed to her was received by Me." I awoke in fresh tears and have never doubted since that the New Heavens and Earth will contain all that we have treasured and lost, restored and transfigured by the Mercy and Love of God. A new Creation without them is now untenable to me. And, as one commenter has shown, Isaiah believed it too. And so, I will also rejoice with you in the hope that your beloved κυνάριον will one day greet you as a part of "the whole creation which is straining on tiptoe to see the Sons of God come into their own."

  13. Truly, UP, the poem may be of comfort, to feel you are in good company (besides all of your SF fans!)

The poem is dear, and comforts me when I remember my beloved Someone.

  14. Heartafire, you had the wrong url.

It is found here:A Dog Named Beau.

That was the name of my dog when I was a kid.

It makes me smile and cry. Thanks.

I am so sorry to read about your loss. We have been down this road, it's very hard. At present we have several canines (well, 6 actually - one just rescued this week but hopefully finding a new home soon). We love them all.

    Hugs to you and yours.
