ReplyDeletethought i might try my hand at this. let me know what you think.
Is this a New Year's resolution to blog more regularly? I have been using our weekly sermons as a starting point partly because they are not commented upon publicly, and partly because they keep me disciplined to listen, think, pray, and blog.
ReplyDeletei started my blog as a response to the itch in the back of my brain to find more to life than going to church and volunteering. Through a long discernment, I have been led to seminary and the whole world has changed for me. My call found me. My blog hopefully will be more regular as I feel more confident that my voice has a place. I have been very leary of saying what I think since I fear sound too fundamentalist when I say I love Scripture and thirst to read it and mine if for treasures.Maybe like you, I stay underground most of the time. But there is a real hunger that needs to be addressed! I love the Episcopal Church, but I like to discuss Scripture more than we do. You seem rather versed and comfortable with Scripture. How have you found a balance between the liturgical church and your thirst for Scripture. I don't thin they are mutually exclusive, but I have been unable to find a balance. But we run the risk of being a willy nilly feel good demonination if we continue to down play (as I see it) the importance of Scripture.
ReplyDeleteThe Episcopal Church, in its present iteration, has chosen a new approach to the study of Scripture which was outlined most colorfully by the Bishop of Pennsylvania, +Charles Bennison: "We wrote the Bible. We can change it." Thus saith 815.
ReplyDeleteCan you provide a link to that quotation? If that is what our Seminary trained leaders think, how can people keep choosing such leaders? a kempis might have to stay underground in seminary.
ReplyDeleteIt's widely quoted on Stand Firm and T19, but I'll see if I can find a specific link.
ReplyDeleteThis comment by +Bennison was personally heard by Dr. David Virtue in a sermon by +Bennison at Church of the Good Samaritan in Paoli and was duly and extensively reported at www.virtueonline.org on 10/31/2007. This particular article also outlines many other misfeasances, malfeasances and nonfeasances by +Bennison. He especially admires +John Shelby Spong and various other apostates and heretics of the Unitarian tradition.
ReplyDeleteI suppose that, in the interest of being fair and balanced, I should relate that +Bennison says that he was misquoted. Nonetheless, the PB and DBB inhibited him about 2 months ago and that quotation is one of the charges against him. Who knows?
ReplyDeleteOh, I remember this guy. My relatives in PA said they stay away when he visits their parish.
