Hosea 3
The Lord said to me again, ‘Go, love a woman who has a lover and is an adulteress, just as the Lord loves the people of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes.’ So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer of barley and a measure of wine. And I said to her, ‘You must remain as mine for many days; you shall not play the whore, you shall not have intercourse with a man, nor I with you.’ For the Israelites shall remain many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or teraphim. Afterwards the Israelites shall return and seek the Lord their God, and David their king; they shall come in awe to the Lord and to his goodness in the latter days.

These "thematic" or pc or whatever gaps in the lectionary go against the original intent of the Anglican reformers, who assumed that lay people hearing Scripture read in course could profit from it.
ReplyDeleteWhat we have via these gaps are the assumptions of "experts" imposed upon the people.
Tim,
ReplyDeleteDo you mean we are supposed to go to church every day?
Ouch!
Thank the Lord for computers so we can expose the experts from time to time and keep up with our daily discipline.
Vanderbilt University has a link to an RCL spreadsheet that is sorted by book. The gaps are systemic and show a strong bias toward false teaching by omission.
ReplyDeleteSome themes in the omissions:
Most references to sheep and goats omitted i.e. not everyone will go to Heaven.
Passages describing the right relationships between superior and inferior are omitted. "Wives submit to your husband..." Also, master/slave, parent/child, sovereign/subject.
Qualifications for elders - omitted. Behaviour standards for all - omitted.
Many warnings against false prophets - omitted.
Many of the lists of sinful practices are omitted. Wrath of God against such practices is also omitted.
Warnings against associating with known sinners are omitted.
Appointment of the 7 deacons, gone. Stephen's defense before his stoning - gone. David cutting off Goliath's head - gone.
Whole books: 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Obadiah, Nahum and 2 John. As well 24 Psalms are gone, mostly revenge or thankgiving for the defeat of enemies.
The editors seem to have picked one of the duplicate parables or stories from the Gospels as authoritative and omitted the alternate versions.
It goes on
Thanks Bill for helping to fill in the gaps.
ReplyDeleteI guess this would be a bigger problem if people were actually doing their daily readings or worshipping daily. (I assume most are not).
Bill -would love to have that Vandy link...
ReplyDeleteWell, when something hits too close to home, it's easier to ignore it than change behaviors or attitudes.
ReplyDeleteCheers.
