In this Sunday's reading from Mark 1:14-20 we see Jesus calling his disciples to follow him,
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news (or gospel).’
As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people.’ And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.
Do we follow Jesus' call, or do we follow our own call? It seems that the prevailing message to young people today is to "follow your heart" which, to a Christian, would mean to follow Jesus, but to vast numbers of non-Christians means to do whatever the human will desires.
This week, I am praying that our wayward new President listens to the call of Jesus, follows not the desires of his heart, and hears the cries of the slaughtered innocents that his policies will, without divine intervention, cause.
I prayed for eight years for Obama, for four years for Trump, and now I will pray for Biden. I don't think Trump had a deep conversion to any orthodox version of Christianity during his term, but he was the most pro-life president since Roe, and may God bless him for that. And may God turn the heart of our current president to hear the teaching of his own church on the slaughter of the innocents.
