Flying Solo

She had to wing it today as a solo priest, but Mary Cat gave a nice sermon sticking to the Gospel. Jesus' final commandment was that we love each other with "agape" type love. We have touched on this theme before. I think this is the hardest commandment to follow on a daily basis. People always seem to get in the way, making it hard to see the Holy in them (sometimes all we can see is the ...hole in them). Of course, we have Jesus' example to guide us, but we have to work at it. If we don't listen to Him, we run the danger of becoming like Linus Van Pelt saying, "I love mankind, it's people I can't stand."

    Do people get in the way or do we get in the way? I think most of the time we can't see past our own "holiness", or down our own noses, to see the Holy in anyone else. In all reality, I think Van Pelt couldn't stand himself, but that hurts too much. I am the same, it hurts to see the real me.

    We let people get in the way by being blind to the Holy in them.

    To quote John Main OSB, "St Paul tells us that there is a light shining in our hearts. St John tells us that this light is the point of divine consciousness, of infinitely pure love, to be found and worshipped in every person—the light that enlightens everyone who comes into this world." Mother Teresa prayed daily to see the Christ in each of her patients.
