Here is an excellent description of the problem of modern gender identity from Pope Benedict's 2012 "state of the Church" address. h/t Opinionated Catholic.
In a world where Christ's rule is rejected, "now we decide for ourselves" applies not only to matters of human sexuality, but to all manner of things (think abortion).
"The words of the creation account: 'male and female he created them' (Gen 1:27) no longer apply. No, what applies now is this: it was not God who created them male and female – hitherto society did this, now we decide for ourselves. Man and woman as created realities, as the nature of the human being, no longer exist. Man calls his nature into question. From now on he is merely spirit and will. The manipulation of nature, which we deplore today where our environment is concerned, now becomes man’s fundamental choice where he himself is concerned."And if you think the Pontifex is just another out of touch, twittering celibate male, I cite the following example from the news to show how prescient his 2012 remarks were:
"An undergraduate student at a small women’s college in North Carolina is seeking permission to stay at the school — and live on campus — after she undergoes gender reassignment surgery in February, which will finalize her transformation into a man."I guess that would be considered a case of somebody wanting to have it both ways.
"Officials at the school, Salem College, are now considering the thorny issue, reports the Winston-Salem Journal."

"In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes." Judges 21: 25Time and time again we choose "our will be done" over "Thy will be done."
"And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil." John 3:19 KJVConsider these things the next time a politician or religious leader describes themselves as "pro-choice".
