The Virgin Birth

In this Sunday's reading from Matthew 1:18-25, we hear of the virgin birth and the saintly behavior of Joseph.
"Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: ‘Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,   and they shall name him Emmanuel’,which means, ‘God is with us.’ When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus."
Joseph was obedient and saintly in not putting Mary away. His family, friends, and neighbors were probably giving different advice.

In today's lingo we might say that "He took one for the team".

When I was little, we would to take old bricks and build forts and such. We used a lot of these,

From Reef2Reef
Joseph's faith was as strong as those bricks.

The world needs more St. Josephs.

(Possibly a duplicate, as I messed up the first one. Sorry.)

I've always thought that Joseph should get more respect in church circles. Mary knew that she had "known no man," but Joseph had to take it on faith. Blessed are they that have not seen and yet believe.

Christmas blessings to you and yours.

  2. The question I always enjoy contemplating is whether Mary and Joseph consummated their marriage sexually at some point after the birth of Jesus. There is evidence for it in scripture. That much of the church denies this possibility is kind of sad especially for Joseph & Mary.
    Merry Christmas!

    1. The dogma of Mary's perpetual virginity goes way back, but certainly is not supported by the Gospels. Yet another reason to not swim the Tiber.
